Mildred Hall (Teacher)

Mildred Nowels Hall, 85, died in the Renaissance Convalescent Center in Muncie, Ind., on Jan. 22, after an extended illness.

She was born April 4, 1919, in Albion, Ind., the daughter of Rolland and Edith (Cornelius) Nowels.  She retired after 30 years as a business education teacher at Niles High School, and prior teaching positions in South Haven, Traverse City and Northport.  She was a graduate of Three Rivers High School, and received a B.S. in Business Education from Western Michigan University in 1940 and a Masters Degree in Business Education from Michigan State University in 1971, with additional graduate work at Northwestern University.

She was active in the Alpha Beta Epsilon WMU Alumni sorority, the Niles Branch of the American Association of University Women, the Fernwood Botanic Gardens Patrons Association, and had been a church school teacher and member of various church boards at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles from 1948 until 1998.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Hall, who died in 2002, her parents, 11 brothers and sisters, and her granddaughter Janie Hall of St. Joseph.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Kenneth R. Hall of Muncie, daughter, Marcia L. Sweeney of St. Ignace; grandchildren, Randall Hall of Midland, Jason Hall of Albany, N.Y., Matthew Sweeney of St. Ignace, Kristen Gamble of Madison, WI, Patrick Sweeney of Ft. Myers, FLA, and Jeremy and Rachel Nemser of Muncie, IN; and eight great-grandchildren.
