Mickey Roy Sowers, age 65, of Niles, passed away late Sunday evening, Dec. 29, 2019, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.
He was born March 11, 1954, in Sturgis, a son of the late Jack M. and Thelma Ruth (Rambadt) Sowers.
Mickey resided most of his life in Niles and was a graduate of Niles High School.
He had been employed by Jack Post in Niles and worked as a gas station attendant and as a chef's assistant at Morris Civic Auditorium in South Bend, Ind.
Mickey was an active faithful member of Granger Community Church in Granger, Ind. Following in his father's footsteps, he was a member of Knights of Pythias Phoenix Lodge #171 in Sturgis and was a talented woodworker. Mickey was a true fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed watching movies.
He is survived by a sister, Myra (Tom) Bergman of South Bend, Ind.; nieces and nephews Tandra Wygant, Tracy Bergman, John Bergman, Byron Sowers Jr. and Jacolyn; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Sowers and Byron Sowers; and a niece, Angela Sowers.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mickey Roy Sowers will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Richard Wheeler will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at a later date at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

I went all through school with Mickey, kindergarten through high school. Always a polite and nice guy. Lost track of him, maybe ran into him a couple times. Like so many classmates, I knew Mickey but did not "know" him. Some of us have been meeting at Martins supermarket the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 8 AM, the group is slowly growing from word of mouth, and I'm getting to "know" some of the classmates better. I wish I'd had that chance with Mickey.

Mickey (and brother Bill) lived across the street from us, on Regent Street....He liked to be helpful in whatever ways he could...he was so strong, he sometimes needed a gentle reminder about that.
I think that he helped my mother a couple of times with yard work, following my father's death...but Mom liked to mow the yard herself !
As close by as he was, we didn't really 'know' each other. I do know that God welcomed him home....

Wow Mickey, that was sudden! Sat down to dinner a couple of times with Mickey last fall. This was like after a 45-yr gap when our paths crossed in the Rural King parking lot. Called a few weeks later and he said he had a cardiac attack right there in his home Church at Grainger. From then on, he was confined to wheeled mobility and oxygen dependent. We had some good talks and catching up, including, running him off a few pages from the NVTattler as he lost his in a fire. He lost his brother (Bill) who lived in Sturgis, MI just a few years ago.
