Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame
It is the highest honor the District bestows upon a graduate and is in recognition of a particular achievement of noteworthy value, a series of such achievements, or a career of noteworthy accomplishment.
Nomination/Selection Committee
The nomination/selection committee shall be a public committee with the exception of two of the alumni who shall remain anonymous. The nomination/selection committee shall be responsible for reviewing, ranking, and selecting individuals from the eligible nominations.
CATEGORIES FOR NOMINATION
The categories and criteria for nomination to the Niles High School Alumni Hall of Fame were developed as a result of input from the Hall of Fame Committee and researching of more than a dozen schools across the country. The final list of categories and criteria reflects the common characteristics of existing halls of fame and the wishes of the general committee as expressed in preliminary meetings.
The submission of a name for consideration will be made in one of six categories. Nominees in these categories must have demonstrated high levels of achievement, award recognition, and significant contributions in their fields.
1. Medicine and Science – graduates who are surgeons, specialists, and/or general practitioners of high regard or distinction; scientists whose findings have benefited humanity in an important area of existence or who have added substantially to the body of human knowledge; recipients of distinguished awards in any field of scientific endeavor; etc.
2. Business and Professional – graduates who are respected economists, influential stock market analysts, CEOs of noted corporations or businesses, particularly successful business persons, legal professionals, etc.
3. Arts and Entertainment – graduates who are well-known or frequently published writers, winners of prestigious literary, acting or artistic awards; influential critics; recognized musicians or composers; media celebrities; etc.
4. Humanitarian and Service – graduates who have rendered consistent and significant service to the local, state, national, or world communities and exhibits integrity and a demonstrated commitment to service through an interest in bettering the lives of others through volunteer efforts.
5. Professional Achievement and Career or Military Service Distinction – The recipient attained prominence through his or her efforts in commerce, industry, technology, the professions, agriculture, the arts, education, government, military or other worthy endeavors that form a record of accomplishment impressive to the citizens of our community.
6. Athletics – graduates who are all-Americans, Olympians, or all-star professional athletes; renowned or especially successful coaches, sports specialists, sports promoters; etc.
7. Lifetime Recognition – This category is reserved for an individual who may not have attained award status in his or her chosen field, but whose life demonstrates high moral character and dignity, or who has demonstrated courage in overcoming extraordinary obstacles in life.
CRITERIA
Once a candidate is nominated in a category, he or she will be evaluated using the following criteria:
- Graduate of NHS of ten years or more.
- Exemplary achievements and recognition in their chosen field or category. The record of distinctive achievement for the candidates should extend over a substantial period of time to assure continuity of performance, stability, perseverance, and maturation.
- Exhibits inspirational leadership, character, service, and citizenship.
- Distinctive records of achievement with recognition and reputations, which extend well beyond the immediate environments in which they live and work.
- The candidate must demonstrate the qualities listed above in a manner that will inspire the students of Niles Community Schools in their pursuit of excellence.
NOMINATION PROCESS
Nomination form is included below. Nominations will be accepted every school year until December 31st of that school year. The committee reserves the right to consider the application, if not chosen, again the following year. Posthumous nominations will be accepted. Recipients will be honored at an Induction Ceremony held in the spring.
The Alumni Wall of Fame is sponsored by the Niles Education Foundation (NEF). The mission of the NEF “Growing Minds…Changing Lives” is to acquire and grant resources exclusively in support of the Niles Community Schools for programs and projects aimed at enhancing, enriching, and supplementing learning opportunities for students, staff, and community.
