Sharon Simons (Hettinger)
Today it was 75 degrees or so in sunny Kansas...with a bit of wind thrown in for good measure.
Some trees are still coaxing their leaves to stay put, but many have already shed their gorgeous colors.
Some good news: Last Sunday, All Saints' Day, I premiered a work that I commissioned in my mother's memory. "...from the Realms of Glory" was composed by Bernard Sanders (he's from Wisconsin, did some schooling in Wichita, KS, and for over a decade now, has been in Germany at a church), for organ and flute. My superb flutist-in-residence, Guy (think French/ gggggee), from Haiti, played beautifully, as he always does. The three movements were titled I. Archangel Michael II. Guardian Angel and III. Archangel Raphael (whose name means 'healing'). The work was extremely well received, and so I'm especially pleased, of course. I look forward to playing it again. Many of you may recall that my mother taught piano, played some organ, and especially enjoyed accompanying instrumentalists at church (First Presby/Niles).
Well...in the Anglican/Episcopalian tradition, we do celebrate some of the Saints feast days...and coming up on 22 November, we'll celebrate St Andrew's day (our patron saint: St Andrew's Episcopal Church!)...and we always have about 12 or more bagpipers and drummers....it's very stirring (some folks may want to leave, but are overcome!!)...You may realize that bagpipes are more of an 'outside' instrument!! That's why they practice out on a hill... And, that day, they choir will premiere a piece that I've arranged, "The Summons," based on the hymntune Kelvingrove. My alto and bass soloists served as the inspiration for my setting.
Anyone driving through the area (Lawrence, KS/Kansas City) over the holidays is welcome to give me a call, or email me to set up a bite to eat -- or a little celebratory drink-- let me know... I'd be happy to see you.
