Sue Sue, the hanson bros.(or in real life, the carlson bros) started their careers in junior hockey in the early 70's when dave hanson started playing in the ushl with the carlson bros. I guess they all looked the same, so someone started calling them the hanson bros. because of the way they looked. Anyway our asst. coach at niles always attended the junior games in chicago and saw the hansons bros. play and came back with nick name for the clubines. Where did your son play and how far did he get, er is he still going

Mike
Jerry sold out his share of B & J, and Frankies is no longer there, the city is tearing it down. Niles sure is NOT the place it was!

Neil, I remember the softball teams we had at Eastside. From our 4th grade thru our 6th grade years each class would put together a softball team and we would play an extended round robin tournament at recesses. Somebody kept the standings and posted them in the hall every day. I think Randy Smith and/or Dan Tinkey were the statisticians(sp)?

I remember the riots...in the '68-'69 years....

You may recall that a number of folks came in on the train from Chicago, where there were even more problems...

I remember them sitting on the tracks (we lived at 10th and Regent)--hoping to stop any other trains coming in [and now, those tracks are gone!]; and the Niles Public Library had just been completed...or shortly before that...and there was a meat market/deli on 9th and Main St...

Those stores and the Niles Library were 'stoned' by the angry guys from Chicago...It really put a dagger in my heart, to see the library ruined...those HUGE windows were destroyed (or several were).

I just couldn't see how throwing stones at a public library would 'do anything' for them! [and still cannot!]

I can also recall that parents or a designated driver would pick up students from school, to keep 'concerns' to a low-threat level.

I found it very interesting that these angry folks would even COME to a SMALL town like Niles--but guess it must've been the first stop that they could dis-embark the train?!

Sharon,

I think the Chicago Thugs came to Niles because of the "BIG Fish in a Small Pond" theroy! If they would have taken their frustrations out in Chicago, chances are, they would have ended up in the belly of a BIG fish in Lk Michigan! Niles, on the other hand, was an easy target because Barney was in charge of keeping law and order! No fear of retaliation there...

C.A. and S-S,
I have to totally disagree with you both on your comments about our society being "softer" and "having a more elevated state of consciousness to a higher plane." I guess I need to move to your neighborhood with Mr. Rogers cause the last time I picked up a newspaper (which I try not to do too often because it's too depressing) it was filled with crimes of the worst kind against kids; in school, out of school, it doesn't matter. Kids today have to grow up so quickly and be so astute to the dangers that are everywhere, including places that we used to think of as safe - even if there were occassional, predictable riots, school was still a pretty safe place for us to be in the 70's. It's not that way anymore. There's too many whack-jobs out there now. Kids get murdered because they made the cheerleading squad or wear expensive tennis shoes. School libraries end up being slaughter houses instead of quiet places to study and read. Slumber parties turn into gang beatings and then get posted on YouTube for the world to view as "entertainment". Our kids are exposed to danger and darkness like we could never have imagine in the 70's. We were blessed to have been kids in Niles when we were kids in Niles.

But hey... on a lighter note, how about those Cubs?!

Sue-Sue Baird (Conlyn)

D.N. Well, funny you would ask. My ignorance is going to show now. My son plays guitar, not hockey. The Hansons that I was referring to are the doo woop singing group, that came and went in the late 90's. My youngest son bears a resemblance to the youngest Hansen, and they are about the same age. At the time the Hanson's were on the radio, my son was playing in coffee houses, and it was a safe bet that someone would compare him to the Hansons when ever he played. His career has out lasted theirs, but I doubt he has made as much $$ as they did, BUT never say never.

Suellen,

I was referring to racial issues and I haven't changed my mind. People in the U.S. are more aware of the value of human life regardless of the color of their skin than they/we were in the 70s.

And though I think it would be nice, I am not living in a fantasy world with Mr. Rogers.

Fish Fry Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suellen Etzcorn (Foster)

Sue-Sue and CA,

I guess I probably could have left the Mr. Rogers comment out, because, as sad as it is... none of us live in his Neigborhood - it's "gated"! But wouldn't it be lovely? No one litters, people sing instead of talk and the most pressing problem of the day is whose going to feed Mr. Fish!

Speaking of Mr. Fish... Looking forward to Fish Fry Friday with my classmates. It's almost like having two reunions in one year! How twisted is that!

I talked to Steve Marshall last night for two hours! Hey, when one has had multiple kids and multiple marriages, it takes a lot of time to get caught! I think he's coming back for the reunion in August. I pressed him for pictures... we'll see.

The lumber co. on front street was burned down. It was called Babits, Babbits or something like that. Wonderland theater is in its places now. I think it took up the whole river front area.
