Sharon Simons (Hettinger)
I remember the riots...in the '68-'69 years....
You may recall that a number of folks came in on the train from Chicago, where there were even more problems...
I remember them sitting on the tracks (we lived at 10th and Regent)--hoping to stop any other trains coming in [and now, those tracks are gone!]; and the Niles Public Library had just been completed...or shortly before that...and there was a meat market/deli on 9th and Main St...
Those stores and the Niles Library were 'stoned' by the angry guys from Chicago...It really put a dagger in my heart, to see the library ruined...those HUGE windows were destroyed (or several were).
I just couldn't see how throwing stones at a public library would 'do anything' for them! [and still cannot!]
I can also recall that parents or a designated driver would pick up students from school, to keep 'concerns' to a low-threat level.
I found it very interesting that these angry folks would even COME to a SMALL town like Niles--but guess it must've been the first stop that they could dis-embark the train?!
