Okay, Eastsiders, anyone remember/know what happened to Jim Klingenfuss (sp?) and Ricky Skyles (sp?). I thought one of them moved to AZ in the 3rd grade or so.

Kathie,

I don't even recall their names!

What about Jim/Russ . . . the twins [was it Cline?]? anyone know about them? I think they were a year ahead of us, too.

Right by Burger Chef was Drolet's pharmacy and little store...Does anyone remember the riot that started at Burger Chef? That was scary!!!

On the westside there was the Westside Super. A little larger than the corner store.

The clubine boys are alive and well. One is in Northern Michigan and the other is in PA.

Portafino is a chinese place now.

Many of you may not that Majereks downtown is no longer there. A fire destroyed it. a big sand lot now. I think a new theatre group is restoring the OLD ready.

D.N. How could you have called Russ and Jim Clubine The Hansons! My own adorable son was tagged with that when he was young, and the Hanson's were Just on the scene then... like in 1997 or something. Are we talking about two different Hansons?

I had forgotten about the store by Eastside elementary!! There were so many kinds of candy there, and most I'd never even heard of much less been allowed to try, but I really wanted to... I think there was a dirt path worn by many little feet from Eastside elementary to the front door of that store.

Yummy's drive thru was the very first burger place my parents took us to. It was again, alot like the candy store experience. It predated McDonalds by at least a decade.

Culinary memories. No wonder I have a weight issue now.

C.A. There is a lot of brain racking going on here! It's wonderful that it doesn't hurt as much as it sounds like it should.

I remember the riot at Burger Chef and the one at school in 71/72. I got caught walking down the hall and a string of girls (of color) were comming at me holding hands in a chain across the hall as they were walking towards me, when they got to me they punched me in the stomache a bunch of times claiming I was pregnant (not tru) Two of the girls were actually friends, I thought, at least I spoke with them often under normal circumstance. Peer pressure and the times made everyone crazy, I think...they, the authorities at school tried to have all of the students in groups of grades locked off in different rooms until the rioting was over, like the cafeteria. My brother was so tall he grabbed my arm and said your comming with me and threw me over his shoulder and carried me out of the school and took me home. My hero, to this day. The principal and my brother almost got in a fist fight over that one........ahh the good ole days...

At the same time those fights were going on outside there were fights inside the school, I had (still have) several black friends that watched out and would NOT let me in the restrooms because of fights going on inside.
Thank- You Venessa! and Marsha West! (sp)

Didn't we just call them Spring riots - almost like it was a natural response to having had cabin fever for too long. I recall tire irons and chains one year. Wild stuff. Was anyone ever hurt? Hope not. Also remembered a "fun" Fayette time - Deb L and I went out for our 18th belated b'day and did a bar crawl starting at the state line and ending up at Fayette. I ended up in the car sleeping it off and she partied on! Remember being pretty embarassed but hey, at least it was legal. I did drive home and ran into the house - the car ran into the house (only bumped it) - attached garage was the problem. Had to fly down to Florida the next day to see my grand parents. First flight ever and the lady next to me was drinking bloodies! Almost puked in her lap. When my kids say "things are different for them" I say, BS! : )

Niles made the national news because of race riots.

Reading about those times makes me feel so sad. I remember the principal at Ring Lardner being a pacifist, and trying to talk everyone into a calmer state of mind.

I know we have, as individuals and as a nation, elevated our state of consciousness to a higher plane.

I don't remember what "sparked" the riots. Does anyone? They were frightening times though.

I think a time line is what I need, because I don't actually recall any riots while I was in High School. I recall them taking place while I was still in Jr. High.

Eric is right it was a Officer from the City, and a K-9 for the City was shot and killed there in the parking lot.
Sue-Sue is right I believe that we as a country have grown and kids today have no idea.

Jerry Johnson of the Niles police dept. He resigned/retired not too long after and bought into the B & J pub across from Franky's.

One the disruptive moments was when MLK died when we were in Jr High. Several days of trouble all over the US

Yes Neil we kind of called a bluff and met at connors house thankfully no confrontation took place
