Well Peeps, I just attended my FIRST country concert in Detroit last weekend! I heard Lady Antebellum, Montgomery Gentry, Miranda Lambert, Sugarland, and Kenny Chesney. The best thing is that I was able to wear my cowboy boots (no spurs) as I really don't have many chances in Niles to wear them. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out that Montgomery Gentry was actually two people, not one guy ... I kept thinking that the camera guy for the big screen was just messing up his shots. There were many happy people there but it really bothered me that people were tucking their jeans inside their boots ... definite sign of a greenhorn! I appreciated that all their lyrics had true meaning...for someone.... and no screaming, with the exception of a hell-yeah every now and then ;)

Jim...noticed the line about "It's My Life" and thought you'd like to know that the song was originally from the group "Talk Talk" (early 80's band). An introspective lead singer, Mark Hollis, was the front man for that band. Natural History is a CD that might interest you. If you'd like to hear music that has meaning, albeit abstract at times, check out "Morrissey's" stuff. He was the front man for "The Smiths" for a few of years until the wheels fell off. He's still making music as well. There are many artists who have come and gone but some remain and, obscure as they may be, I continue to choose and purchase their contributions to society. I have an eclectic collection of vinyl and CD's that keeps things interesting around here...especially on the weekends!

Jack- Morrissey & Smiths - now that's a blast from the past! Did you ever listen to Skinny Puppy, Ministry, or Revolting Cocks?

Jim,

If you are finding a derth of "good music" being produced lately, I think it's because the the industry has changed a lot since the 70's, and the execs are deciding what will and won't be played on the radio.

There are some internet stations that play new original music from young unknown and unsigned musicians that can't get traditional air time.

Check out a college radio station if you want variety. In ATL we have the GA State station, abumn 88.5, but they don't stream, and there is a station for GA Tech, and the university of GA, UGA. Don't know if they stream or not.

There is an internet station you can google, called wild man steve's. It's not PBS public radio, but it is definatly listner supported.

I love zydeco and Ska... How about you?

and you've got to try www.pandora.com

Good heavens, CFM, that must've been one heck of a concert! I don't remember who sang it, but "I was country before country wasn't cool"! I hated and despised it when I was a kid: all that twangy caterwaulin'!

Was forced to watch "Barn Dance", "Hootenanny", and Dolly Parton and Porter Waggoner. Then came "Hee-Haw" during "the growing-up" years, and by golly, those songs DID make sense!! Then came them-there "cross-over" groups like Poco, The Eagles, etc. And I became hooked forever.

Willie Nelson (named my "best dawg" after him!), George Jones, Conway Twitty, Charlie Daniels, George Strait, The Highwaymen, Ronnie Milsap, Kenny Rogers, etc.: the music of the '70's and 80's.

It was ages before I learned there was a DIFFERENCE between country and western! Fell in love with a guy named Chris Ledoux, a rodeo guy who wrote songs, then went public. He died the same day as my brother did, so I had a dual broken heart!!

He wrote a song called "Western Skies". My cousin Jim lives in Montana, and I've spent mucho time out there. I cry every time I hear it!! Check it out when you have time.

I sure will darlin' - thanks for the suggestion! For a long time I wanted to move out to Montana then a bunch of Michigan Militia peeps got the same idea and I thought that I might think it over just a bit more! I have only driven the northern route twice from Michigan to Ft. Lewis in Washington but I truly believe that it is on the top of my list as the most beautiful country, ever!

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes. It has been a busy but blessed day. I look forward to many more (but maybe a little less busy?). Blessings to all...

Jim Lanier

Well, Happy, Happy Birthday, Margie!! And an early belated-birthday wish!!

Jack-- where do you come down on "Girlfriend in a Coma?"

Suzi-- you left out one of my favs, Dwight Yokum!

Sue Sue-- if I could get more than two seconds of "stream" at a time, I might be able to recognize the song. Or commercial. Or political add. Or Joe Cocker reference. Sadly, some of us live in a third world country, as far as the Internet is concerned. I'm guessing I'm not missing much, as long as I can see what kinda shit-kickers Cheryl is wearing!! Hey, girl, can you step on the cock roaches in the corners?? ;^)

Oh, Margie, I am so sorry that I didn't notice your birthday until now. My computer works only half of the time. You are a beautiful lady, inside and out, and I hope you enjoyed your special day.

Cheryl, I meant for you to check out Chris Ledoux. But Montana is an okay place to check out, as well! Long haul from down here in "paradise". I'm MORE than ready to do "ROAD TRIP"!!

We are hoping all of our Southern California classmates are OK with these awful wild fires raging. Check in here if you can and let us know you are alright.

Sue Ratkay (Jacobs)

I think I'm the one closest to the fires here living in Burbank with La Canada (where the fires are) right over the mountains next to me but we are doing fine - other than the air quality. Tried to go out and work in the yard Sunday but the air was a bit too tough to handled! Kat in Simi Valley is out of range along with Jude in Orange County.

Thanks Wendy for checking.

Thanks for letting us know you are OK-----what terrible images we see back here on the news! Stay safe!

Katherine Holloway

Simi is out of the range of the fire but the smoke is horrible. It has been very hot but we can't have the windows open in the house, We can see the big plumes of smoke over the hills and we are overcast with the smoke. I work in an outside mall and the traffic has been very bad there. As in no one is out and about.

Vicky Schwan (Soderberg)

Those of you in the California fires have my sympathy - this is the first summer Montana hasn't been covered in smoke for years!

Being able to see the flames from your house is eerie, isn't it?

Stay safe - keep us posted.

and Happy Belated Margie!

Vicky

Yes, Californians -- stay safe. If you are told to evacuate, evacuate!

On a lighter note, I suggest that we start a new topic on the forum. Please submit your favorite CLEAN jokes, dorky or lame, as long as they're funny! Here's one of mine:

Where do cantaloupes go in the summer?
To John Cougar's Melon Camp!
(Thank you, Beth Beers Christie, for the inspiration.)

VERY SCARY COMMUNISTS WE HAVE IN OUR GOVT

AND what about all the communist radical CZARS? DO YOU KNOW about them?

09/02/09 09:26 PM #3128

Jim Lanier

Hey, that's a funny one, Sue!!

09/02/09 11:02 PM #3129

Suellen Etzcorn (Foster)

Sue-Sue, I agree it's very scary! I cannot believe the Czars that are being put in place to "control" the masses! We should all be concerned that our govt is disregarding our Constitutional Rights - it's a crime! If a Republican were in office, NONE of this would be tolerated - our press is bought and paid for! Voice your opinions to your State Rep and Congress person - it's making a difference! Uphold the Constitution and keep the faith!

One of my favorite jokes (probably it's because I can only remember a very few!) is:

Q: What do you call a cow with its legs cut off?

A: Ground beef.

(groan!)

What do you call a dog with no legs?
Anything you want, he 's not coming anyway!!

Happy Birthday Wendy, and thanks for all the hard work!

And H.B. to Dana and Larry, too!!
