Hey Cheryl, where are you going in Mexico? I am very sorry to put a damper on your upcoming vacation, but living here in SD we hear a lot of Mexico horror stories that you may not be privy to. There are many areas that are not safe in Mexico anymore...Our school and club teams used to cross the border for soccer, volleyball, surfing, cycling, baseball, and many other tournaments but none of them go anymore. Church groups no longer make the trip...Just about every one I know, knows someone who has been robbed, assaulted, or kidnapped south of the border.
It used to be so very cool in Mexcio, the beaches are gorgeous, we used to go camping and enjoy cheap shrimp and lobster and mucho cerveza's.
I work in the International Division of my company and there are current Travel Alerts for many parts of Mexico, below is a current alert.
Travel Alert U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Bureau of Consular Affairs --------------------------------------------------------- This information is current as of today, Mon Mar 01 12:34:01 2010.
Mexico - Security
February 22, 2010
The Department of State has issued this Travel Alert to update security information for U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico. It supersedes the Travel Alert for Mexico dated August 20, 2009, and expires on August 20, 2010.
While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year (including tens of thousands who cross the land border every day for study, tourism or business and nearly one million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico), violence in the country has increased. It is imperative that U.S. citizens understand the risks in Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim.
