I just received word that Dennis Connors is suffering from a severe brain hemorrhage and has been sent home from the hospital to be cared for by hospice.  Please keep Dennis and his family in your prayers.

Vicki wants everyone to know that Dennis did make it home on Tues. afternoon with the help of Hospice for his final days, he is still unresponsive (yes it was a major brain hemorrhage), but I believe he can hear all the good things being said to him.  I am still praying for a miracle and my prayers also go out to his family and loved ones.  Vicki says that  if anyone that wants to come see Dennis, please do so, she believes the moon with it's beautiful halo last night was a sign from the angels opening their door.  Feel free to call 574-993-2030

Rest in peace, Dennis, and enjoy all the beauty and joy of God's heavenly kingdom. For all of us left behind I share a poem that has become so dear to me over the past year and a half since my husband's passing:

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yestetday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yestetday.
You can remember him and only that he is gone,
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn back,
Or you can do what he would want:
Smile, Open Your Eyes, Love and Go On.
David Harkins 1959

I don't know Dennis' wife, but for those of you who do please pass this on to her.

Faith, I print the poem and gave it to Vicki.  She wants to thank you so very much.  Vicki was class of 76 (Vicki Klute), her and Dennis were not married but had been together for almost 10 years, she was the love of his life and he let her know that all the time and he was the same to her.

Pam,

Thank you for passing the poem on to Vicki.  I pray it will bring her as much strength, peace and comfort as it continues to bring me.

On the day of the Memorial for Dennis as we stood in a long line to pay our respects for such a kind, compassionate caring man, the sun shined bright and big in the sky.  I had to smile even thru the sorrow because I know it was Dennis looking down at the massive amounts of people there and smiling thru the sun for he knew that his time here on earth that he did and was a wonderful addition to all those fortunate people who knew and loved him.

I was over at the High School last week, and got to wondering what ever happened to Mr. Helm.  I did a search on his name, and found out his son is a Professor at Andrews University.  So I emailed him and here's what I got back:

Start at bottom:

Hi Dana:

Thank you for your interest and remembrance of my father. It is good to hear that he had a positive influence on his students. While I am sure that he would have been happy to have heard from you, unfortunately he passed away in 2006.

It is a high possibility that it was me that performed at Niles High School, my brother was also on the team for a year or two, but we would have overlapped.

I hope you don’t mind, but I will pass this email on to my mom who is still alive, I am sure she will be warmed by it.

Thanks again,
Herb

Subject: Your father

Dear Dr. Helm,

I am a graduate of Niles Community Schools, Class of 1974, and I’m trying to locate any information I can on Mr. Herbert Helm, one of our math teachers. I’m guessing, based on the picture of you on the Andrews University website, he might have been your father.

Since Mr. Helm was such an influence on so many of us, and we still talk about Helm’s Angels at class reunions, I was wondering if you could provide any information about his current status. Is he still alive, and in the area? Does he accept calls from former students? Just that sort of thing. We will be having another class reunion in a couple of years and I’d like to post something on the class website about him.

If he was not your father, sorry for the inconvenience, but you can certainly understand my mistake. If I remember correctly, he had a son on the Andrews gymnastic team that performed at Niles High School while I was there, was that you?

Sincerely,

Dana

Thanks for the info Dana on Mr. Helm.  Sorry to hear of his passing.  I'll try and find his official obituary info. to post but I did start an In Memory page for him in the 2006 year section.

Also, the '74 Tattler flipbook is back on-line.  I had some technical difficulties with it and needed to do some work---but it is back up and running now.  Thanks to those who noticed!

Hope all are doing well!  Wendy

Met up with Dick Crocker and had some lunch and beers. Thanks for driving us all over Seattle and surrounding areas and it was a pleasure seeing you. I enjoyed the food, drink and most of all, conversation. To talk about events from so long ago is a special thing, why, because we were there and experienced them. So many bits and pieces from our childhood and beyond and it's almost surreal to see someone after 37 years and feel so comfortable. Thanks again Dick you're a true gentleman! For all you folks thinking of a trip to the Seattle area, it's a very beautiful part of the country. Give Mr. Crocker a shout...he's a boat load of fun! Looking forward to my next trip to Seattle.

Thanks for the kind words Jack.  It was great seeing you too.  Even though we (Class of 74) shared so many experiences through the years, it's a lot of fun to hear individual impressions and memories.  Jack, our conversation reminded me of many things I had forgotten or perhaps seen from a different perspective.   Hopefully I didn't talk your ear off.  I grinned all the way home, you made my weekend.

Dick, in my book it was a win win. I had the opportunity to see a classmate and we shared a lot of memories that have made us who we are. A couple of down to earth souls that have lived the years and lived them well. It was a great trip/meeting and I share the same sentiments. I could've rambled on for hours Dick, maybe next time. Take care friend...

Dana,

Thank you for sharing the letter from Mr Helm's son. I loved Sr Math and Calculus with him...and our classmates. It was a neat class--with Myriam (from Belgium) and Lassi (from Finland--btw, he still keeps in touch with me!) of heady thinkers... I haven't really used any of my math skills, except to beat the cashiers every time in figuring my change!    HELM'S ANGLES ... fun to hear it mis-pronounced in PA announcements most every time--probably planned!-- and to share that unique time together.

Does anyone know what Lyn Powers is doing?

I've not seen any information on her...just thinking about our HELM'S ANGLE class, and then French...I was wondering about Lyn.

Also--Mark Coons?
