Well Sue-Sue, it was all Tom Bonner's fault! (Has the statute of limitations expired on this? Yes?) It was his brain child, I know that's hard to understand at this point in his senility. Many, many covert planning meetings were held at the Fayette, around Tom's throne. I was just the money man. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Other than being one of the ten thousand motherwhats? up on the roof, whose name was duly noted by officers of the peace, which we were disturbing. They arrived after delivery took place. Delivery was effected by an unruly mob of Fayette customers, late in the evening. We used some ladders and a lot of teenaged muscle to push-pull the thing up and over. Let me give a shout out to Les Holt, who obtained the hulk from his dad's wrecking yard. But full credit and commensurate jail time should go to Tom Bonner!

I'm not sure everyone knew about the sham organization we created, Students for a Better School (SBS)? This was my idea. They literally asked us to do it, at a student council meeting. They said, "We need more student organizations, to put on dances and such." Well, I was paying attention just then, and we formed SBS, keeping funds in a bank account which we had control over. Along with paying for the VW carcass, we funded keggers and some recreational drugs... is the statute of limitations up on that?!? I know, I know, you're surprised I'm not up the river with Bernie Madoff! The kicker was, the Class of 75 continued the SBS tradition, but they couldn't use the money they collected. No offense, class of 75ers, but what's the point?!?!

If you remember right jl, you and I got caught up on the roof hiding together! Of course after the police shot at me for trying to pull up the ladder!!

You know, I've been wrackin' my mind tryin' to remember who got busted with me, and it was you!! Now we can be cell mates, my brother! I don't remember 1Adam12, shots fired, however...

OMG You guys carried it up a ladder, over the roof and into the court yard??!?! How many of Tom's loyal followers were there that night?

Kudos to all of you! It must have been a wild night. And shots were fired too!?

I am so proud of you... SBS. At least you weren't annoyingly political. and again, Kudos!

OK, my memory is foggy on this one, but I remember turning 18 and going to Indiana to get a legal drink. Was it legal to drink at 18 in Michigan? Or was it the other way around, and the people from Indiana came to Michigan to drink legally at age 18?

OMG I am so glad the DUI laws were not so tough then.

Correct me if you think I am wrong, but I think the police were and still are much more forgiving to young women than young men. I cried my way out of a couple of tickets.

Sue Sue.....it was legal in Michigan and not in Indiana. I remember because we used to smuggle booze to ND to party with GUYS?? OMG

I love the VW story. I never knew and NEVER would have guessed.

jl, I was in charge of the ladder, helping get the cement and shovels, rakes, hose, etc. up on the roof and over. When the police pulled up I started to pull the ladder up and they shot twice in the air at me, I dropped the ladder and ran back on the roof, thats where you and I met, and then we went to hide!

It was an inside job one of our classmates brother was a custodian and left the hose and nozle out so we could get water for the concrete. DC tell your brother thanks for us.

I crawled down into the other courtyard and hid till the police left. When all was clear I walked home and was about a block from my house a policecar pulled up to the yield sign. So I booked (that was a 70's term) through the back yards to get away again. As i walked down my driveway to the back door a spot light shined on me, I froze in my tracks. The light was on me for about fifteen seconds then the copper took off. Never did find out who the cop was but he knew who I was.

CEMENT?
RAKES?
SHOVELS?

WTF? There is STILL more to this story.

Not just a bug in the court yard.... Why did you need cememnt, rakes, and shovels?

I can not imagine the adrenaline that must have been surging through your veins... It's so dangerous to fire rounds into the air.. they do come down. (you probably weren't thinking about that though)

I was thinking about getting the hell out of there! the cement was to be used in the vw to make it hard to get out of the court yard, rakes ,shovels, etc. was to mix the cement, we tied a rope on the front of the vw and pulled it over the school, thats where alot of noise came from , oh yea and all of us being drunk!!!

Steve I would guess there was maybe thirty cars in a parade from the Fayette to Holt's and then to the school I bet nobody noticed.

Back to the flash-drive conversation: thanks for the info from astute classmates.

And--for those who celebrate...

A blessed Holy Week and glorious Resurrection Day....

With this week being more-than-full for those of us church musicians/ministers/et al... I will not be reading again until after Easter!

And, I will miss the repartee....

Steve, Tom, and JL......so who was it that was discovered hiding under a school bus by the "Fuzz" and then hand cuffed to the under side of that same bus ?? Was it Joe Paquette...???

Tom Houseman

Not all of the participants on the VW incident spent the night building courage at Fayette. Some of us were sensible and went to bed at the normal time to build a "cover" story. Then we snuck out of the house around 2 am hoping that the light sleeping parents wouldn't wake up and quell the prank before it even started. I remember walking a half mile to meet my ride (couldn't risk starting the car because dad would have heard that for sure) at the corner. Funny that I remember Mike picking me up, getting to the high school, giving my name to the officer standing next to me on the school roof (what warning shots or shouts?) but not getting home. Of course the next day Principal Stevens greeted me in the hallway with the famous "I've got your name on a list in my office - I'll be talking with you later" speech. I don't think we ever did have any follow up conversations about the prank and I certainly don't remember any punishment.

I can't believe how crazy everyone still is!!!! Jim Lanier - OMG- I think I laughed harder than ever yesterday reading your responses!!!! Back in the day I just thought it was the organic (and nonorganic) "influences" we used to partake in that caused your rambling and flight of ideas.. Of course,(scarily) I understood everything you said! Doesn't anyone else think it is scary that Lietzke and Crocker are working with nuclear power?????????? I just wanna know if there is anybody thatDIDN'T barf on Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill?(Maybe I wasn't supposed to drink the whole bottle?)Bev, Cheryl, and Suellen I expected to be talkers but Vance??????????????? When in the !@#$% did he come out of his shell????? I tried my darndest to talk to him back in school and got only one word replies! This stuff is too addicting!!

Dick Crocker

Bryon is smater than I am, he knows what he is doing with nuclear power. I only know enough to stay away. The closest I got to it was a field trip we took in Junior High to the Cook Nuclear Power plant.

sorry Dick- in my old age I must have had some brain synapse problems in my recall of your occupation when I was reading profiles yesterday!

I'm gonna tip-toe carefully on this one, being as he's a black belt and all, but Steve, are you SURE they fired their weapons?!?! I don't remember that, and I think it would have attracted my attention! I clearly remember being cuffed by Maui P.D. for a little problem my brother caused in '99, but that's another story!
I think we need full disclosure from Tom Bonner. Do I have to get (NHS74 ace reporter) Brad Laughinstock to interview you?!?! What was the genesis of the idea? Who were the ring leaders? The NHS Six?? If Houseman knew about it, who was the security leak?!??! And who was Deep Throat?!? (Due to modesty, I'm not gonna follow up on that one, let your imaginations run wild!!)
Most importantly, why wasn't Principal Stevens sacked?!? It happened on his watch!!

OK, I'm going to tell everyone one more time, YES there was gun fire at ME holding the ladder!! At first the police did'nt know this was a PRANK!! NO I was'nt that drunk!! They threw one person on the ground in the squad car! If some of you guys were on the front line with me, you would have heard and seen the GUN FIRE!! The vw was already in the court yard, I was trying to get the cement over so we could finish the job!! Then hell broke loose!!!

04/10/09 04:36 PM #1229

Jim Lanier

Okay big fella, If that's the way you remember it, that's the way it was! And I'll help ya fight any of these sod-suckin'chicken pluckers who say it ain't so! I remember how you single-handedly faced the tidal surge of Benton Harbor fans, standing out on the gym floor with your N sweater, in between them & me! None of them got through to me!

Pam Wery (Payne )

OK Guys

I'm trying to get a copy of the report from that night to get this whole thing in the "right" light. Moon light, some kinda of light.
Hope to have it soon, It was filed away YEARS ago and will take some time.
As for the gun shots, from what I was told by a dispatcher who was working then, they DO recall a single shot fired in the AIR in hopes to stop Everyone involved.
Silly cops! As for the Statue of limiations, YES they have passed!
Everyone can breathe Easy now!
