We P.E. professionals do get a little (very little!) bit of planning time each day ... plus we even get a lunch break! What a life!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, did I mention that tough-thing-to-deal-with called SUMMER VACATION!

Tom Houseman

Newt - Yeah - and Christmas break, Spring break, not to mention the other "teacher development" days - code for you need a break from the kids! What are the requirements - 180 days? Compared to us working stiffs who work 12 months each year... but I'll still take my job over yours because I'd be in prison for having killed a kid by now.

OK, school just dismissed for the day. So I am not skating as a gym teacher ..... Mr. Houseman, you may be interested to know that Hastings has the shortest calendar year of any school in the state of Michigan. Due to the length of our school day (7:50-3:35), we have a shortened year: September 6th to May 22nd. The Hastings school system saves a bunch of money on operational costs, hourly employees, etc. by setting it up in this way.

Newt I always knew you were a good planner

Cheryl Frame (Malinowski)

Deb - I don't know why we always drank in barns, maybe because we were only in 8th GRADE and we couldn't go to the bars yet???? You and Tom turned 18 a few months before any of us did :( ...and stop worrying about the gosh darn spell check!

Dave- I thought that you were in my advisory b/c that is when I first met you. I remember that I was humiliated because he asked me to explain the "modules" to the rest the class. He said, "Frame, you came from St. Mary's and they're supposed to be so smart over there so why don't you explain it." I had no idea what he was even talking about b/c I was not paying attention. I ended up teaching in the same building with him for about two years... and he still was picking his nose!

Tim - you forgot about checking the pressure in the balls. I was fortunate enough to teach PE for two years and I thought that I died and went to heaven! When everyone else was preparing for MEAP tests and grading common assessments or working on benchmarks, I was checking all my balls:)

Tom - one cool thing in Michigan... it's hard to get fired. You wouldn't be put in prison the first time but maybe the second or third, especially if you were not sorry for what you did!

01/28/09 07:02 PM #188

Jim Lanier

I'm pretty sure Tom would get fired for checking his balls in class...

01/28/09 09:03 PM #189

Cheryl Frame (Malinowski)

Just the pressure in his balls, Jim! AND I am sure that eyebrows would not be raised if he used the hand sanitizer!

Cleanliness is next to, darn I forgot but I am sure it is good

Being sort of "medically inclined" I think I learned that when there is a lot of "presure" in your balls - your eyebrows raise automatically... Didn't anyone else pick that up in A&P?????

Great checking out the catching up! I also recall Hester Scott as being the Wicked Witch of the West's twin, the REALLY evil one. But I think I had more issues with Mrs. Newton who was just an unbearably ornery coot.

Reading through all the posts I also think that Sue and Jim would make a great stand-up team. Or better yet, develop your own show, like Sonny and Cher, only olde......um....better!! :)

01/29/09 08:26 PM #193

Suellen Etzcorn (Foster)

I'll be Sonny and Jim, you can be Cher, cause you have bigger boobs than I do and your voice is higher.

Tom Bonner

Kathhy old "fig" Newton scared me too

01/29/09 11:01 PM #195

Jim Lanier

That's fine, Sue, not to mention that Sonnie is DEAD, and Cher is HOT!! But it's your choice.
And let's not forget the commedians that crack me up-- Cheryl Frame Lubowsky (that can't be right? Like "The Big Lubowsky??") and Steve "Dick" Merica! They could be George Burns and Gracie or maybe Bruce Willis and Cybil Sheppherd from "Moonlighting," that was supposed to be funny, right?

Faith D. Mitchell (Biggs)

Cheryl - I loved the Spring Fling, especially the years we got to work (volunteer) for it...that was a blast!!! I completely forgot about the Spring Fling until you brought it up. I looked forward to it every year!!!

Tom - I'm cracking up over your comment about being in prison for killing a kid by now if you were a teacher...heck, I had those same feelings when my daughter was going through her rough teenage years...OH MY!!! Not sure how we made it through that challenge, other than the fact that she had two older brothers who weren't afraid to pick her up (as she kicked and screamed)to shove her in the car and take her home...goes back to a comment I've often made to my daughter years later (in fun, of course), "If I could have figured out how to have grandchildren without having children, I would have done it in a heartbeat!!!" It's so funny now because she admits how awful she was back then and is now asking me how I dealt with all that nonsense. Her kids are at the age where they are more than starting to test the boundaries. I look at her and grin...total satisfaction! Paybacks her hell..right? Oh - and I always thought boys would be harder to raise...NOT!

Jim - I've got to stop reading your posts before I go to bed...yet another visual I didn't really need before hitting the sack... You are funny though...got to give you that one!!! Keep it coming; I'll get over it!

Has anyone thought about getting together Friday night before the reunion Saturday night? So many of us are coming from out of town; it would be great to get together more than once.

Brenda Vogel (Visser)

Hi Everyone,

I don't know how/if we could make it work, but we could have something at my house on Indian Lake if everyone wants to make the treck? I did a map quest and it is @ a 2 1/2 hour drive from Niles to Howard City (30 mi N of Grand Rapids). Lot's of you have been talking about a motorcycle ride? Others could carpool? We could have it Sunday or whatever works?

I have lots of floor space if people want to plan to spend the night (NO drinking & driving, strictly enforced) & head home Monday. If you are flying in, you could fly out of Grand Rapids Monday?

:-) I haven't even moved in yet, it would do wonders for my reputation as my new neighbors see lots of motorcycles & cars arrive & a loud noisy party!! Great 1st impression!!

Reunion planners, how many people might we be talking about? Maybe that should have been my 1st question? Yikes!

Brenda

Faith, I have the solution: don't go to bed! I've been thinking outside the box so long, the box done gone!

01/31/09 10:53 AM #202

Tom Bonner

Jim if you spend time in bed maybe you will "thinking" inside the box more

Disclaimer: Someone sent me this, I DID NOT WRITE IT:
It's winter here in Michigan
and the gentle breezes blow,
seventy miles an hour,
at twenty five below.
Oh, how I love ole Michigan
when the snow's up to your butt.
You take a breath of winter
and your nose freezes shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful
so I guess I'll hang around.
I could never leave my Michigan
'Coz I'm frozen to the ground!

Loved the poem Jim! I just got back from walking my dog in the field behind the school---snow up to my ying yang (and his too). My face is frozen, my contact lenses are stuck to my eyeballs and I can't feel my toes or fingers. I guess if you can survive 'ole Mich this time of year---you can survive anything. Man, it is cold!

Hey Brenda---party in Howard City Baby!!!!!

I just spent the evening with Diane Scafaria (Orr) and Paul Rifenberg. We had a blast looking at all our pictures from high school - and there were A LOT. I'll scan them all and send Wendy the CD so she can put them on the site. OMG, is all I have to say...!

It was so much fun going down memory lane together and we laughed hard enough to have sore side muscles for the next few days. I also have three pictures of the Volkswagon in the courtyard. Can't wait for you all to see these. They're a scream!
