Karen /// Miss Furst was HOT ... and probably still is or at least lets just assume so for my sake ... AND ... I am sure that Bud Magrane knew it!

Bud was one of my all time favorites (teachers/coaches that is) ... Dave Crouch, Roger Hargraves, Dave Davidson too) ... next to Miss Furst of course. And what about the dynamic duo at Ballard of Mr. Sheilds and ___ the young one that y'all loved so much ... ??

Tracy - It wasn't this Tom who would have been singing in front of 6th grade class - I'd let him slap me over and over, before I'd sing in front of anyone...

Tom G.,

I dated Dave Furst from Brandywine H.S., who was Miss Furst's brother. Dave was the "whoops" baby in their family and was quite a bit younger than his brother and sister. We probably dated for about a year, which was a long time back-in-the-day! It was always a little weird when I was with Dave and his family for their get-togethers. It was kina hard separating the teacher imagine from the person. She seemed a little uneasy with it as well.

All three of those kids were very athletic. Terri, Dave's older brother and Dave, were both State Champions in track and field. Terri went onto Central and had a very successful track and field career and then coached after he graduated.

Dave, on the other hand, liked to party a little too much and was kicked off of U of M's track team for lighting a joint up in the back of a bus on his way back from a track meet. I think that was his Jr. year in college. I believe I had heard he's now a psycologist... oh that's a roit!!!

OK, you guys figured out the sixth grade teachers - Robert Tolly and Joyce Schwalen. The junior high science teacher with the wicked paddle was Mr. Hodgson (a.k.a. "Crater Face") and the young junior high English teacher was Mike Horvath. He also coached our track team.

OK, as long as we are going way back. Heres one for the Eastsiders... How many remember "Miss Hester" the principal.. OMG Could a woman be any more scarey? I remember wanting to be so good, so I never had to go to the principals office. She had the worst underbite anyone could have. I remembering getting word that Dennis Stamp was killed in a horrible car accident. Remember he married the gym teacher from Ring Lardner Gretchen Stamp.. Wonder what happened to her?

If the old principal you're referring to is Hester Scott -- yes, she was scary (Mostly scary looking). But in my college days I got to know her quite well through the Methodist Church in Niles. She was a wonderful person.

Tracy (and fellow Westsiders) -- I distinctly remember the song you refer to about the Russian girl from elementary music class ... It stuck with me through the years ...I sang it to my own kids as they were growing up:

I'm bewitched by a girl named Sophia
With a nose like a full blown balloon.
And her barbarous teeth are a jagged saw
That glint by the light of the moon.
What can I do, What can I do?
Enchanting Sophia, I'm mad about you.

Oh her head is as big as a pumpkin
And it doesn't have one bit of hair.
So she wears an old mop and she calls it a wig.
There's none with my love can compare.
What can I do? What can I do?
Enchanting Sophia, I'm mad about you.

His name was Dave Hodgman and he always had one hand on or near his crotch and his finger in his nose. He was my advisor for 3 years, along with Jerry French and Bruce Ferguson. I was tardy one time after gym class. My choice was to have Denny Baab (counselor) CALL MY HOME OR TAKE A SWAT! I thought that there is no way that he would crack me hard but I was desperately incorrect. I had to go out in the hall, bend over and grab my ankles, then he took that fraternity paddle with the drilled holes and let me have it. I had a huge welt on my behind when I got home and you could even see where the holes were drilled. I was scared to death to tell my parents because I didn't want to get in trouble. My how times have changed! Shirley Furst married Bruce Miller and finished out teaching elementary at Brandywine. I was able to teach a couple times with her early in my teaching career. She was and still is a doll;) I can't believe that any of the Ballard guys have not mentioned Jeannie Oswald (sp)

Oh yeah...she was like the "Barbra Striesand" of Niles!! What about that choir teacher? He was at Ballard. Some dufus. He called everyone's parents after we skipped a choir practice and went to some party instead... He called my house and asked for my "mother" - who had passed away just a few months earlier.. Brilliant-guess he didn't do his homework or maybe he was just tryong to see how much trauma a kid could take....

Cheryl Frame (Malinowski)

Jeannie Oswald was the choir teacher but she left after 7th or 8th grade. The guy must have replaced her but I can't think of what he looked like or his name. I am drawing a complete blank!

Tim --

I don't remember that "Sophia" song -- the one I was talking about was "Minka."

Said the Cossack to the maiden
"Love, my heart is heavy-laden,
duty calls and I'm afraid en-
chantress, we must part.

"I beseech you, fairest Minka --
wait for me, I hate to think a-
nother man might come and tinker
with your faithful heart."

Off the Cossack went to battle;
all alone poor Minka sat el-
even years till she grew fat
although her heart was true.

When at last her Cossack lover
came back home and looked her over
He began to court another --
broke her heart in two.

I really should be using my brain cells for storing something more valuable...

Cheryl,
Yeah - that dude was "forgettable" I can't remember his name either. Especially after replacing Miss Oswald- she was a sweetheart! I just remember handing the phone to my brother because I din't know how to answer the question, "Is your mother home"? He got an earful then -lol!

Tim, you are so right. I knew Hester was in there somewhere. I'm sure she was a very nice person, but as a small child I was very frightened by her...How old was she when you met her in college. She seemed really old in grade school..

Faith D. Mitchell (Biggs)

Tom H. – You are so right! Rev Tolly was our teacher in 6th Grade. Thanks for posting his name. And I completely forgot about Mr. Arnold! I thought he was pretty cool. Of course I can imagine you might have a different picture of him, looking up from you ankles and all...if you know what I mean :-) I'm certain those teachers would be locked up in today's world! The humiliation must have been worse than the sting!

I remember Miss Schwallen's name as well, now that you posted it, Tom G. She seemed very scary at the time! I remember thinking I was very lucky she wasn't my teacher. I see Tracy felt the same way about her...I think 'the big witch' is a good description.

You are right, Tracy, Mr. Tolly was very nice. I can't believe you remember the words to a spiritual we learned way back in 6th grade...wow!...what a memory!!! Do you remember how Mr. Hartman took it when he found out the air was let out of his tires, or didn't anyone stick around...bet he was PO'd!

Tim – Crater Face...I do remember that!!! I can actually picture him now!

Bev – I didn't know the faculty at Eastside; wonder if Miss Hester was related to Miss Schwallen!

Thanks for that walk down memory lane, everyone!

PS...Jim - don't worry about shak'in this woman! I've gotten pretty brave and bold over the years! There are, however, some images I'd prefer not to think about :-)

Bev I remember Miss Scott as being very intimadating to little kids but I was a good kid and never had to go to the office. I did get to talk to her later and she was a very kind person

Faith - At least I could reach my ankles back then...now I'm lucky to get to my knees!!!

Newt & Tracy - You two are really sick for remembering lyrics from 6th grade - I thought I was doing well to remember the teachers' name!

01/27/09 05:31 PM #176

Beverly Finney (Geist)

Tom, thanks for remembering her just like I did. As she got older she probably got nicer. Older people tend to do that. As Bill Cosby would say, they are just old people trying to get into heaven. I would think we have all gotten a little nicer in our older ages too. I know I'm a lot nicer to my grandbabies than I was to my own children..Nana's have all the time in the world, no hurry..I'm sure grandpa's do too.

Coming from a St. Mary's chick - I thought the only good thing about Westside was that little May Spring Fling thing! Though seemingly harmless, almost the entire cheerleading squad was dismissed. I don't think they knew quite how to explain it so they just settled for a meeting with Ms. Furst, and our parents at Lunger's house. Thank goodness for Dr. Bhistkuhl being their next-door neighbor at the time!

Deborah Lunger

9th grade science teacher - Mr. Magrane I think
I got paddled more than once - it had holes in it and it hurt like a XXXXX
He was the basketball coach too

Cheryl,
I remember the meeting at my Mom and Dad's house, the Saturday morning after our night of heavy drinking in Mike Peter's barn.
My sweet Mom kept changing your "pan" all night because you were so sick
And we kicked ourselves off the cheerleading squad as punishment for our disgrased behavior. What were we thinking??? Kicking ourselves off I mean

Man those parties were great though. Why were we always drinking in a barn? A swig from the bottle of Cheap Boonsfarm wine back then brings back more memories than a $15 glass will today

where is the spell check?

Cheryl,

I too rememner that homeroom with Hodgman in the 9th grade. Also remember his paddle which was the first and only one I ever experienced. I was new to Niles that year and paddling was unheard of in the school system I came from. Kind of like today.

I could use a paddle in class today. (At least the threat of one!!!!!!!!!) I can assure you that kids in 2009 are way more disrespectful than we ever were.

01/28/09 12:01 PM #182

Tom Houseman

Newt - Threat of a paddle - yeah, they should allow not only the threat, but the use of one. BTW - how is a teacher allowed to post in the middle of a day? Oh, that's right, you now teach PE which means you have lots of free time!
